Letter to the Salford Advertiser 18/05/2012

Dear Editor,

I must respond to last weeks letter by P Moore from Worsley who said that having a directly-elected Mayor for Salford is a no-brainer because Labour won the election. Labour have been in power in Salford for 40 years. I campaigned for a mayor whilst Labour fought hard against and lost the referendum. Why ? Because they know under this new system their grip on power is weakened. Did I trounce the streets of the city persuading residents to vote YES thinking Labour will lose straight away. The answer is No. The first Mayoral election even produced a result where the majority stayed at home and the majority who voted, voted for parties other than the Labour Party. Therefore, they are beatable now in Salford. In the right circumstances, Labouer will lose the Mayorality of the city and hence their power. Can I thank everyone who voted for me and the Community Action Party both in the Mayoral and local elections and all our candidates.
