Letter sent to Andy Burnham MP, Lisa Nandy MP, Yvonne Fovargue MP & Lord Peter Smith - City Status Wigan

Published on by mikemouldingcommunity-action

Dear Lisa Nandy MP, Andy Burnham MP, Yvonne Fovargue MP, Lord Peter Smith of Leigh & Leader of Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council,

Re:- “City Status” for the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan

I have started a campaign for the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan to seek and achieve “City Status”.

I have done this because I believe Wigan has all the attributes to become a city and Wigan now deserves this accolade.

You are all aware that a Borough to achieve “City Status” is a great honour to be granted by HM Queen.

Achieving “City Status” brings enormous benefits in terms of economic, tourism, civic pride, private and government inward investment. “City Status” for Wigan will boost jobs, put Wigan on the regional, national and international stage.

I believe the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan has all the attributes of being a city for the following reasons :-

The Borough’s population is well in excess of 300,000.

Wigan’s sporting achievements in rugby and football deserves such a recognition.

The Borough’s location in the region connecting Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside means it is ideally geographically placed in the region.

Wigan’s ancient and proud history and its Lancashire roots, as well as its development into a Metropolitan Borough means it is now ready for promotion to “City Status.”

I am sure you can find other valid reasons why Wigan should be supported for this.

I have submitted an epetition on the official government website as follows – “Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council” http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/50086

I am asking you to see whether you support “City Status” for the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan given the overwhelming reasons to support and what you can do to support us in this objective.
I have copied this letter to the Wigan Evening Post and they may contact you to seek your views on this ambitious proposal.

I look forward to hearing from you in due course.

Best wishes

Michael Moulding, Deputy Leader, Community Action Party.
